Extensive Damage Caused by 12-Hour Fire at Mallusk's ISL Waste Management Plant

Updated: Feb 5, 2021

A 12-hour fire has resulted in extensive damage at ISL Waste Management plant in Mallusk, County Antrim.

There were 68 firefighters and 12 appliances, including an aerial appliance and a High Volume Pump, which allowed for 10000 litres of water per minute to battle the blaze. After receiving the call at half past eight on Sunday evening, firefighters worked through the night and into the early hours of Monday morning. While small pockets of fire still remained, they were under-control.

As of writing the cause of the fire is unknown, the fire is believed to have started in the self-contained storage facility, as reported by the Northern Ireland Fire Service.

The damage is extensive, with firefighters working to dampen the debris of the fire in order to eliminate any further risk.

While the building is currently being demolished following this incident, ISL Waste Management remains operational, with collections continuing as normal on Monday, Managing Director Barry Donaghy has said. “Our main processing plant will be fully operational today once the smoke has cleared but I can reassure all our customers we will be making our routine collections as normal”, he said. Donaghy apologised to local residents for any inconvenience suffered from the smoke generated, and paid tribute to the speed and efficiency of the fire service in tackling the blaze.
