Happy 50th, Coleraine!

Updated: Feb 5, 2021

This past weekend marks the 50th anniversary of Ulster University at Coleraine. The lead up to the 5th April 2019 has been an exciting one, with collaborations between the University and the Causeway and Glens Borough Council being a topic of conversation within the university for months.

For the last 50 years, Ulster University at Coleraine has grown from a recommendation that a university be established in Coleraine in 1965, to a location that was host to Queen Elizabeth II’s Garden Party’s in both 1977 and in 2007, to an area containing Northern Ireland’s first Enterprise Zone, Atlantic Link Campus, in 2017.

More recently, the University has worked alongside the Causeway and Glens Borough Council, Garfield Weston Trust and The Honourable The Irish Society, in the creation of a public art project. The project is to be a sculpture, with the project artistic director being a local artist - Sara Cunningham-Bell.

When asked, Provost Karise Hutchinson stated that “As we come towards the end of our 50th-anniversary celebrations of Ulster University in Coleraine, this impressive sculpture will stand as a symbol of our past, present and future role in Coleraine and the surrounding area”.

“This project is a real community endeavour. Renowned local artist Sara Cunningham-Bell has been working hard to deliver our vision with the help of our students, local school pupils, community groups and local businesses”.
